Trier to Bernkastel
Tuesday
This morning we explore the town of Trier, the oldest town in Germany, dating back to Roman times. We will see the Porta Nigra, part of the old town walls and the magnificent St Peter's cathedral, the oldest church in Germany and a UNESCO heritage site.  The central nave was built in the early 4th century.
After lunch, our cruise continues along a very picturesque section of the Mosel River to Bernkastel, a village famous for wine production. What better way to discover the local  Moselle wines than in the cellars of Dr Pauli Bergweller in our late-afternoon tasting?
We return to La Nouvelle Etoile to enjoy dinner aboard.

Bernkastel to Zell
Wednesday
Our morning cruise continues along the Mosel, to the charming town of Zell.  This is one of the most beautiful towns on the river and is famous for its wines. We will visit the wine cellars of Dr Josef Weiss, just outside the town.
In the afternoon, there is time to explore the town on foot before returning to La Nouvelle Etoile for dinner aboard.

Zell to Cochem
Thursday
After breakfast, we begin our leisurely cruise past numerous vineyards, arriving in the pleasant town of Cochem.  After lunch on board, we drive to the castle Burg Eltz, one of the few castles not destroyed by the French King Louis XVI in 1689.   The castle is known as the Queen of the German Castles.   We enjoy an excellent guided tour through this fascinating 12th-century castle before returning to the barge.

A visit to the Musee de l'Ecole de Nancy takes us back in time to the birth of the Art Nouveau movement, which originated in Nancy.
We return to La Nouvelle Etoile for a peaceful afternoon cruise, followed by dinner aboard.

Lagarde to Xouaxange
Tuesday
Enjoy a post-breakfast morning cruise past tidy farms and pastures, reaching Richecourt, where we pass through our last 'climbing up' lock.   This lock replaces 6 ancient locks and brings the barge up 15 meters.  Once through the lock, we continue on our journey to Xouaxange, where we moor up in time for lunch.
In the afternoon, we discover the gentle art of crystal blowing at one of the local Cristalleries, followed by a visit to Sarrebourg to see the famous Chagal stained-glass windows.
Dinner aboard.

Xouaxange to Lutzelbourg
Wednesday
Today is all about cruising!  After breakfast, we continue gradually climbing to reach the crest of the Vosges Mountains.  With a size of about 8000 km², this area includes forests and fabulous views, feudal castles and ruins. After cruising through two tunnels carved into the mountainside, we take the world-famous Arzviller lift.  This unique lock allows barges to move up or down the mountainside through an incredible feat of engineering of weights and balances.  The cruise continues through the Zom Valley, dotted by ruins of ancient castles.  We moor up in the pretty town of Lutzelbourg.  Dinner aboard.

Lutzelbourg to Saverne
Thursday
We begin the day cruising through the heart of Saverne, passing the 18th-century real Bishop's Palace, amid the Alsatian countryside.  After lunch on board, we take a scenic drive along the Route du Vin d'Alsace, stopping at Obernai.  Venture beyond the 14th-century ramparts surrounding the city to discover this ancient town, including the Market Square.  Along the way, we will stop at a vineyard to taste some of the Alsatian wines.  Dinner on board.

Saverne to Strasbourg
Friday
Our cruise will end in Hochfelden, just on the outskirts of Strasbourg.  After lunch on board, we visit this parliamentary city, including the fold museum and the 11th-century Gothic cathedral.  There is a fine array of shops to explore too.
We return to the barge to relax and then enjoy our Captain's Farewell Dinner aboard.

Tonight, enjoy the first gourmet dinner aboard at our mooring in Zaandam.

Zaandam to Ouderkerk
Monday
After a hearty breakfast, we will visit Zaanse Schans. In this reconstructed historical village, we can discover working windmills, clog makers, a cheese farm and a mustard mill, all typically Dutch emblems.
Following lunch on board, enjoy the views as our afternoon cruise through the very heart of Amsterdam along small canals.  On either side, the beautifully preserved building and architecture take us back to a previous century.  We continue cruising along the River Amstel as far as Uithoorn for our overnight mooring.
Dinner aboard.

Ouderkerk to Gouda
Tuesday
After breakfast, we take a leisurely cruise to the town of Gouda, famous for its production of cheese, pipes and candles. After lunch on board, we will visit a local cheese farm and explore the stunning architecture of the town, excellent shopping and the stained glass windows in St.John's church.  These are reputed to be the most beautiful in Holland, dating back to the 15th century.
We return to La Nouvelle Etoile to enjoy dinner aboard.

Gouda to Delft
Wednesday
Our cultural immersion continues today.  A visit to a vodka distillery, Ketel One, begins the day.  After passing through Rotterdam, the world's largest port, we continue to the beautiful town of Delft. It was here in 1602 that the Dutch East India Company began, the first joint-stock company in the world.  The world-famous artist Jan Vermeer was born in Delft in 1632 and spent much of his working life there.
A visit to the Delft factory is fascinating and instructive, as we learn how this pottery is made.
There will be ample time to explore this historic Dutch city in the afternoon.
We return to La Nouvelle Etoile to enjoy dinner aboard.

Delft to Oude Wetering
Thursday
We continue our voyage along the canals passing by Leiden, a popular university town.  The university was founded by Prince William of Orange in 1575. Many Pilgrims lived here before setting off to discover the New World.  We cross the Brasemmer Lakes to Oude Wetering, a perfect mooring for lunch.  For gardens and non-gardeners alike, this afternoon's visit to the Keukenhof Gardens delights and fascinates. Enjoy 70 acres of stunning spring flowers, including narcissus, hyacinths and tulips of every colour and genus.
Dinner on board.

Oude Wetering to Haarlem
Friday
For early risers, the day begins with a trip to the world's largest flower auction in Aalsmeer, where an incredible 10 billion flowers are sold each year. We return to La Nouvelle Etoile to continue our cruise to Haarlem.  Along the way, we can visit the Cruquius Museum. Dating from 1846, the pumping station is a fine example of neo-Gothic architecture.
What could be more fitting to end our cruise than a visit to the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem?  The internationally acclaimed collection of Old Masters represents the Dutch Golden Age in all its glory.
We return to the barge to relax and reminisce over the beauty of the flowers and fine art.
Enjoy our Captain's Farewell Dinner aboard.
