5 Top reasons to visit the Nivernais in central France

Thank you for clicking.

Please read on to discover my top 5 reasons to explore the Nivervais:

1 A unique chateau!
saint fargeau
Nestled in the beautiful countryside, within cycling distance of the canals,  is Saint -Fargeau château at Guedelon.  The first medieval chateau to be built in the 20th and 21st centuries using traditional methods, this is a not-to-be-missed, hands-on experience.
See ancient crafts including stone masonry, carpentry and rope making.   Try your hand at ceramics, or enjoy a medieval lunch..
Stay all day, to enjoy the Sons et Lumiere finale which will take you back in time, if visiting in July or August.
A perfect day out for all the family,  which you’ll never forget.

2 Historical monuments

Step back across the centuries:
Visit the beautiful romanesque Basilica of St Mary Magdalen at Veseley, the roman town of Nevers, and it’s famous 350 year old porcelain factories.
Dating from the 11 century, the  town of Charite sur Loire  boasts the second largest church in Europe while the 12th century Bazoches chateau, home of the Marechal Vauban and still privately owned by his family, is open to the public.

3 Regional Wine and Cheese
food and wine
With it’s clement climate, the Nivernais produces some excellent wines.
Visit the vineyards at Sancerre and Pouilly on the Canal laterale à la Loire.. and taste some of the excellent cru of the region… Ideal with a goats cheese from nearby Chavignol!
On the Nivernais canal, Bailly and Irancy are both excellent stops for a ‘degustation’.
The Nivernais is renowned for it’s cuisine, and has a range of excellent restaurants to suit all budgets and tastes.

4 Sports
sports
Enjoy the well-maintained tow paths and country lanes for cycling and walking, whether you prefer sharp inclines or more sedate valleys.
Alternatively, how about the top sport in France?  The waters abound with whitebait, perch, carp, black bass and the famous ‘silure’ which can measure up to 1m50!
You might prefer to cool off in the water… At Baye, you can enjoy swimming, canoeing, catamarans, rowing, dingies  and wind-surfing in the designated lake.

5 Adventures
adventures
The cliffs at Saussois are home to a rock climbing center, and open to all.
Other adventures available in the area include accrobranch  and 200m zip-lines , paintball, nature trails in the Morvan natural park, karting at Magny Cours, off road cycling… There are even ‘rosalies’ on disused railways! Pedal along for up to 15km through fields full of wild flowers…

With excellent transport links from Paris,  quiet waterways,  and beautiful scenery, the Nivernais is certainly an idyllic destination.

We offer a wide range of traditional  and modern style self-drive boats throughout the region from which to discover this jewel.
