Libje- Redon to Josselin

Libje is owned and run by a Scottish couple with a passion for Brittany, Ian and Jane Slade.

Before coming to France, Ian and Jane hosted diving trips around the Scottish Islands, and then more general cruises aboard a Luxury Motor yacht.
Ian is a fully qualified barge captain, while Jane is not only a qualified nurse, but has also won the Country Living Magazine's "Professional Cook of the Year" award and the Tesco Seafood cooking championship.
With such skills, our clients are guaranteed to be in safe hands aboard Libje, which translates as "live!", as in Live your life!
Libje is also available as a Full Board cruise: See our Luxury Boats section.

Libje is a Dutch Steilsteven barge built in 1930 and lovingly converted by Jane and Ian to ensure spacious, comfortable accomodation for up to 4 guests.
The hull, aft accomodation (staff quarters) and teak wheelhouse are original, whilst all the guest accomodation has been completely rebuilt.
Latest techology combined with hardwood joinery, oil-fired central heating, a wood-burning stove for autumn evenings and large windows, create a warm, light ambiance aboard.

Libje has two spacious, tastefully decorated ensuite cabins, with good lighting, opening portholes, a sky-light fitted with blinds, central heating and ample storage, hair-dryers and bathrobes.
Designed with our taller guests in mind, the cabins have full head room and full size double beds.
The ensuite bathrooms have full sized showers, vanity units and electric flush toilets.

The saloon opens on to the galley, so you can watch the master chef at work if you so wish!
With comfortable seating, a book and CD/DVD library and satelite TV, this is an excellent place to relax and dine, or to sip a glass of wine as you watch the world glide by.
On sunny days you can enjoy sitting up on the sun deck, the forward seating providing the perfect view point.
If the weather decrees otherwise, you are welcome to join Ian in the wheelhouse, where again, the raised seating provides a good view.

The Libje could have been converted to accomodate 6, but the transformation for 4 has provided very spacious and pleasant accomodation.

ITINERARY
Day 1: Redon
You will be met at our agreed meeting point, either at Rennes or Redon.
Redon is the crosroads of the Brittany waterways network and stands at the junction of the River Vilaine(running from St Malo to Arzal) and the Nantes a Brest canal.
Redon is an important historical town: The Saint Saveur Abbey founded by the monk Conwoin in 832 brought cultural glory and riches to the town.
Redon also hosts the Inland Water Transport Museum where you can watch a video presentation in English about the waterways that you are about to discover.

After settling in, enjoy a four course welcome dinner and the time to discuss your cruise in detail.

Day 2: La Gacilly
Heading west on the canal de Nantes a Brest, we reach Glenac, from where we will set off to visit La Gacilly.
The old main street houses a host of artists and craftsmen including wood-carvers, glass-blowers, onyx workes, tanners and musicians.
The world famous Yves Rocher beauty product company is based here as well as Europe's first 'vegetarium', a museum dedicated to the plant world.
This is a great day out and not to be missed.
Dinner is taken ashore, with your hosts on hand to help you select your meal if you wish.

Day 3: Glenac towards Malestroit
Today we cruise through unspoilt countryside and natural woodland, passing by the Isle aux Pies ( Magpie Island), a famous beauty spot with woodland and cliffs alongside the river.
After a short stretch of canal through woodland, we will moor in one of the pretty villages, perhaps Peillac, for the evening.
Your hosts will excort you on a visit of the village.

Day 4: Malestroit
After a gentle cruise passing several small villages and towns, stopping as and when you wish, we reach the gorgeous town of Malestroit with it's half-timbered houses with over hanging gables and carvings in it's winding streets.
A street market (Saturday), regular music events and a lively atmosphere make Malestroit a must-visit.
For those historians among you, there is a museum dedicated to the resistance struggles of the second world war in nearby St Michel.
Dinner can be taken in one of the many first class restaurants in town.

Day 5: Towards Josselin
Continuing our journey, we pass numerous villages and again, can stop as and when you wish. During our scheduled stop at Le Roc St Andre for bread and provisions, you may like to visit the church impressively perched above the river on a rocky outcrop, or perhaps the nearby 12th century chateau at Rochefort en Terre.
In the village center, take time to explore the antique shops and see artisans at work.
Rochefort won the prettiest village award so many times that it was banned from entering the competition again! Cameras at the ready...

Day 6: Josselin
We arrive at one of the best and most famous canal views in France, as we round the bed in the river Ouest to see the magnificent chateau of the Rohan family towering above the river.
After we moor below the chateau wall, explore the pretty streets, ancient church, timbered Medieval houses, steet cafe, family run shops, and the historic doll collection in the Chateau museum.
At the heart of Brittany, Josselin offers an excellent choice of restaurants for your evening meal, ranging from an upmarket yet reasonably priced restaurant high above the river, to a waterside 'creperie'.

Day 7
After breakfast we say goodbye to Libje, and take you on to Rennes or Redon by car for your onward journey.
